Hello Everyone! I hope you will really enjoy the forthcoming 9 days, "The Navratras" with a festive, Indian, Holy spirit to it. Today as you read is the beginning of Navratras- the nine holy nights dedicated to Goddess Durga, the first being today.
But what interests me more is something else. This date 13 October 1948, in Faisalbad, Punjab, Pakistan, born to "Fateh Ali Khan" was a God in Disguise, called "Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan". The "SHAHENSHAH-AI-QAWAALI" meaning the King of Qawali, THE NUSRAT FATEH ALI KHAN "SAHAB". Some one for whom the word "MAESTRO", "USTAAD " would have been invented.
The world knows him by his voice. If anyone who has heard him once anytime has fallen prey to his voice trap. That feeling of trance, is nowhere to find. In a time when Qawali artists were looked down upon, Nusrat Sahab's father wished for him to choose a much more respectable profession. The first ever live performance of Nusrat sahab was at an adolescent age of 16. He redefined the whole lineage of Qawali singing. So much that today whenever, wherever you are attending a Qawali night or a Sufi night, it is incomplete without paying an ode to any one of his creations. The man having performed at WOMAD (World Of Music, Arts and Dance) in London 1985, in Paris 1985 & 1988 had a stature too high to be compared. Having performed at Brooklyn Academy Of Music, New York in 1989 he earned great admiration of American audience.
Nusrat Sahab was something else. With abilities to sing and perform at such high notes for hours and days left spectators and co-artists astounded. The Star traveled the world to perform where his audience waited for him like no less than his devotees. Sung for both, Hollywood and Bollywood; he made the world aware of Sufi and Qawali style of music.
As an avid admirer of Qawali, as an avid admirer of Urdu, as an avid admirer of Urdu poetry(shayari) and as a poet, the 67th birthday of Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahab is a day i could not miss talking of; sharing of.
Apart from that i wish you very happy "Navratras". May you dance, sing, enjoy the "Jagrataa" and "Mata ki Chowki" and welcome happiness, success, wealth and contentment in your lives.
JAI MATA DI
Remember, who celebrates Life, who celebrates the Lord
The lord, life celebrates him
In Lines of the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahab,
"Is karam ka karoon shukr kaise adaa
Jo karam mujh pe mere nabi kar diya
Main sajaata tha sarkaar ki mehfilein
Mujh ko har gham se mere bari kar diya"
