I just tweeted a few days back "I have always been a little late than others! When people tweeted, i facebook'ed. Today when i am tweeting, i wonder what's next genre?" And i seriously think i am late and lag behind in the race of the virtual world. Furthermore to console and motivate myself, i keep calling myself a bit "Retro" or a bit "Vintage".
I strongly think that Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and many other virtual worlds have encouraged, influenced the participation of "Mango People" in important matters. The participation and the say of a common man has increased manifold. In fact, it has further broadened the horizons of human understanding about different forms of Art and Cultures. The social media has been a great aide in bringing recognition to this labyrinth of talent scattered all over the world. Politics is a clear example of how social media educates and involves people connected from all over.
On the contrary, i am a bit inclined towards calling the Social media, The ANTI Social media. Here is a doubt if the social media is really social?
No doubt, it has made us potent enough of being aware of happenings PMPS (Per Minute Per Second). But has it not affected our real lives in a great and destructive manner? And i don't blame the social media for that. It's you, me and everyone, our behavioral patterns.
Tell me! how would you feel
* When you are with your family and kids are busy involved in chatting on messengers with there friends.
* When you are talking important things with your wife/girlfriend and an Instagram or a Twitter or a Facebook notification pops up and adds to the ambiance.
I was with my friends one fine Monday at my favorite coffee shop opposite The Taj, New Delhi. It was just another usual sight that compelled me to write this piece today. It was a Monday evening, when a group of friends walked in and seated themselves. One of those friends stood up and went to order for everyone. Everyone was busy in there phones doing something or the other. This guy returned from the counter, found himself a seat, took his gateway to another world out of his pocket and sunk in.
So a group of 6 friends sunk in there phones sits across a table, gulps down there meal and walks away. I pity such friends and such gatherings.
Is that what friends meet for?
To sit across each other engrossed in knowing the activities of the ones you are connected with virtually!
Is that what families go out for?
To let the kids check there Facebook profiles while the elders enjoy!
We meet friends to enjoy. We go out with our families to have a good time. There is no denying that the social media has virtually made us the societal king or empress. But it is of no use if it makes us unsocial to the limits where we forget to interact and enjoy the company of people we meet in real life.
Either we, by default are ANTI-SOCIAL or the Social media turns us Anti-Social by giving us one page on Internet calling it a social networking portal.
