Hi Everyone! This post is purely from the heart. No statistics, no hard proven facts and figures but one thing that fills for everything - Personal Experiences. There is a certain image that every nation has in front of the world.
Let's say:
United States Of America - Super Power ; Numero Uno
China - Outsourced ; Capturing World Markets
Russia - Weaponry ; Aircrafts ; Beautiful ladies
Japan - Inspiration ; Electronics
European Union - Broke yet Beautiful
Pakistan - You know it right! (and i am not being parochial)
India - Once The Golden Bird ; The Rich Yet Poor Country ; The Emerging Superpower ; Third World Country ; Corruption ; The Cultural Collage ; Browns
Furthermore, i'll be saying a lot of things. I just hope it all falls in place and makes sense in the end.
My First Experience
I was among st the group of 100 odd students, 25 students each from four cities of India of the same institution flying for an educational tour to San Francisco, CA, U.S.A . We checked in late and needed a late night snack. We called for a cab and stuffed ourselves in. I being the fancy, shabby "I am Mr. Khool" guy threw out my american accent to the driver; "Man! take us to a good restaurant". The man looked at me, smiled and said in punjabi "Paaji! Dasso ki khaana hai" (Tell me what you want to eat). I was surprised and had already made a fool of myself. I looked at my friends in the back seat and every one including the driver burst into laugh.
My Second Experience
I missed my coach early morning to school. As a result, i took another cab from the hotel till college. The blabber mouth i am, i started a conversation again. The moment he told me of him being from Kashmir, i had a smile. I said, "Kashmir is beautiful! adds to India's grace". He retorted back saying; "saab! Kasmir kabhi jannat hua karta tha, Hindustaani or Pakistaaniyon ne mil ke use jahanlum bana diya.(Kashmir once was heaven on earth. Now Indians and Pakistanis have turned it into hell) Kashmir is better being an Independent country".
My Third Experience
We,100 students power dressed in suits were attending these lectures in HAAS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, UC Berkeley in San Francisco, CA, U.SA . Every faculty was surprised and overwhelmed looking at us, listening to our doubts and answers as well. Four faculties gathered the last day in the room and said this to us "You are an eye opener to us! you have changed how we saw India. We clearly see the reasons why Microsoft and others fly down to your country for your people. We have got a lot to learn".
My Fourth Experience
This time me and my friends took a cab from the hotel to a place called Emeryville. As soon as i moved in to the cab, i checked if the guy was from anywhere but India. And this time, he was an American. A casual conversation of life there and he said it was better than the good. He asked me one question which i'll remember till i breathe. He said, "Can i ask you a question?". I nodded in acceptance. He further confirmed if i will really not mind him asking me what he wished to. He said, "I saw Slumdog Millionaire. Is India really the way it's shown in the movie?" I realized what for just an Oscar, we had done! We had showcased ourselves as a poor, poverty struck, needy and an amputated nation. His question enlightened me of how India in spite of being one of the fastest developing nations, is being positioned poorly on the globe.
My Fifth Experience
In 2012, i was on a tour to Europe. The impact of Indians and Indian culture is vast there. During the entire thirteen day trip, from Milan to Paris to Austria to Switzerland to Zurich i had all my meals in Indian restaurants. In Austria, this receptionist greeted us with folded hands and saying "Namaste". So i did the same in return. She was beautiful and i struck up a conversation. She said out of all the expressions of greeting someone, "Namaste" was her favorite.
If you remember when the world was engulfed by recession, India was standing tin tall, proud and unaffected. American President Obama flew down to India to sign deals in order to generate employment back home. French President Sarkozy flew down to India to sign certain deals to aid the french economy.
From all these experiences, i deduced certain things.
We, Indians are smart, real smart ones. We can enter a country and build a life of our own. And if we hold a reputable position in the society, we take great pride in exhibiting and talking of our integrity and cultural orientation. No matter how rough, rude, mismanaged, unsorted, unorganized and corrupt we are, we still form a nation. We run it well enough to compete with other developed nations having a freedom gap of nearly 200 years.
We are lured in name of better lifestyle by foreigners to migrate to there lands to work for them.
Why not work in India, for India?
Why not do something remarkably different in our own country, for our own country rather than living a mediocre life Overseas?
Let's make India proud and live as one proud Indian.
And yes! it's always good to start up a conversation. People don't converse, Worlds do!
