Remember, when you as a child had an itch in your hand as soon as you got the T.V remote. Impatiently, you would surf channels and would end up seeing a cartoon dubbed in Hindi (half of them were Asian). Where you would be sticking to Cartoon Network from 3 to 5 pm, to watch your cartoons from Centurions to Swat Cats to Power Rangers. That two hour session would elate your spirits, getting you in action mode. Again you would book the sofa seat of T.V for Talespin and Ducktails. Pretty sure you have it afresh in your mind. Growing up through the ladder of life, a lot of us were mad about the very famous Small Wonder which played on Star World, where in that robot girl(Vicki) was the perfect kid in the family. I envied her, yes I did. That was fun. Where as, what captured Indian kids on majority was this new found superhero running every Sunday morning on DD National called, “SHAKTIMAAN” who would turn himself round and again flying the skies, in the end leaving us with a message to learn.
Then while some of us graduated from those cartoons to some light hearted comedy shows, I am reminded of the time when CIA came in talking of murders, assassinations and had many of us glued. There are many other T.V shows in the same category when it comes to American television shows. But talking about the Indian Television show which has the same plot, is on air since many years and yet has it’s audience, the very famous C.I.D. Yes, we joke about it, mimic the characters but when you walk into a semi-deluxe salon or a grocery store, you see this show catering it’s audience. Talking of light hearted comedy, we grew up watching “How I Met Your Mother”, our families watched “Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki” and “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi”. When you and I were trying to ape the aura and charisma of Barney Stinson, saying LEGENDARRY the way it should be said, Ekta kapoor reined over Indian families across the globe. She would have been the only reason; the sales of tissue companies grew in India that time. But, while we were learning about wooing women, a lot of us were missing on family values. Yes, a lot of us missed on family values and it shows today. Charlie from “Two and a Half Men” is what every man wants to be.
An eligible bachelor, modestly successful. And then getting all the beautiful girls.
We did not have a single show that could showcase the Indian version of Charlie. Entourage was again a larger than life story about a Hollywood actor and his four friends. If you’ve watched it, you can’t get ARI GOLD out of your head. Trust me, just a glimpse of the show would make you addicted. We do not have an Indian T.V soap revolving on the same plot. No Offence, but as I see, American T.V shows taught us of one night stands, casual sex, how to woo a woman and also respecting a woman.
Understand that to woo a woman, YOU NEED TO RESPECT A WOMAN.
The major difference between American T.V. Shows and Indian T.V. Shows is there respective thought processes. While, we Indians still find the thought of a Joint Family sacred enough, Americans believe in Live-In relationships. While we Indians live and earn for the future, to see our daughters make us proud, to see our sons grow tall enough to rub shoulders with, the Americans live in today. While every Indian gives up sixty minutes of his/her life for the next sixty years to come, Americans live in the moment, every second, every dime of it. But I hope India looks good that way. That’s why people know it as India . Less evident, but still today values nurture among innumerable young hearts. Quite evident, talent nurtures in India . Quite evident, MONSTERS nurture in India!!
Coming back to what differentiates the American T.V shows from Indian T.V shows is the thought process, the mental impressions about the society, the way it functions. There is a decent scope of improvement left in both the spheres though, but let us not touch those dots.
After all, it’s all for Entertainment.
